Silent dog whistle training?
Has anyone used a silent whistle and if so did you have success in training your dog?
I have an 11 week old APBT who responds instantly to the shaking of the treat bag. And I was wondering if silent whistles work and if so would I be able to teach my dog to come by blowing on the whistle every time I shake the treat bag.
The whistle would be a nice cue for an outdoor recall. You’d probably want to have a verbal cue, as well, for when you’re just hanging around in the house.
I wouldn’t shake the treat bag, though — could get you a “show me the money” dog (one who only comes if sure of a treat!).
Practice like any other recall — associate the whistle with her coming toward you when she happens to be on her way to you anyway, and then give a treat. Repeat a bunch of times, in different areas of the house, with you sitting, standing, out of sight, etc.
Play games in which a bunch of people stand around and call her — if she goes to someone who didn’t just call, that person stares at the ceiling and ignores her. If it’s the person who just called, she gets a treat and some loving..
Then play the game with everyone empty-handed. If she goes to the person who calls, that person gets a treat from a nearby stash for her, or, if you have enough people, have one person who is the official treat-holder (and is never allowed to call her during that game). That person brings a treat over to the person who called her.
Etc, etc . — replace treats with life rewards, until she is willing to come to you whenever called, with either the verbal cue or the whistle.
