Good treats for dog on prescription royal canin duck/potato?
My dog was just prescribed royal canin duck/potato for allergies. Vet said stay away from treats with other meat proteins. She said vegetable treats are good. I’m looking for treats with safe ingredients that won’t interfere with her diet. She likes soft, meaty tasting treats. I need something she’ll like because she’s a picky eater and I need to be able to hide pills in it.
I know royal canin isn’t great. My dog is on California Natural lamb & rice right now, but she’s incredibly itchy and the vet wants to try duck/potato. This is the only bag of royal canin I will buy, though. The 2nd ingredient is duck by-product meal, which is substandard. If her itching subsides with this food, I’ll change her to a better brand duck/potato.
Thanks for all the great answers! I will definitely try cooking some real duck for her. And it’s nice to have some regular treats on hand too that don’t need refrigeration.
Oh boy. Here in Canada, Royal Canin is no longer considered a great food. This is because the company was sold to Proctor and Gamble and they changed the quality of the food.
I’d look into duck/potato formulas made from other premium companies that process the food themselves and not contracted to another place. That’s what started the whole pet food recall mess. Eagle Pack, Canidae, Timberwolf, Wyson, just some great products. You want holistic food for your dog.
Lamb is good for dogs that have food allergies. Gentle on the stomach.
Anyway, sorry for going on a tangent. I do believe Royal Canin makes treats as well. How about making them on your own? There are lots of books on how to make dog food for main meals and treats. That way you can control what goes into your dog. 100 percent. Does she like peanut butter? You can try putting the pill in a teaspoon of it and take your finger and scoop it into her mouth. Or, how about cheese? And then there is a hard pat of butter to fold the pill about. That always worked for my dogs!
