I have a 1 year old shar pei/boxer mix ( i have to use grain free food because shar peis are prone to allergys) i also have a 6 month old pit bull i feed them taste of the wild dog food and i ll fry up burger and put in carrots and oatmeal and add it to the food or i use chicken or liver.I feed a cup of taste of the wild with a cup and a half of the homemade food twice a day.Do you believe i m feeding them to much?and also any new homedog food recipes would be appreciated
i walk my dogs 2 miles a day weather permitted and thank u all for the advice
As long as you are following the guidelines on the bag for how many cups a day and remember that if you are mixing dry and regular food that the total should be considered the cup amount.
If you can look down on your dogs and see a waist and no ribs sticking out, then they should be fine. Rule of thumb is start with guidelines, watch your dog and adjust accordingly. I have two bassets and each was getting identical food but the male packed on the pounds. So now he gets slightly less.
One word of caution with too much protein before one year: Hip Dysplasia. If you do your own keyword search you will find that this condition is not always hereditary but can be “given” to young dogs by encouraging too fast of growth with too much protein. It’s always nice to see a young pup growing fast, solid, and beautiful and bigger than other dogs his age but then he starts to limp and you find out you gave him this life long sentence. Just a word of caution!
